Want to know what it would be like to live in a post-apocalyptic world? Read Renegade by Amy Dunne and you will know it sounds down right horrifying. Nope, no zombies, even scarier an airborne disease that wipes out billions of people, and leaves the rest searching for ways to survive.
Alex Clarke is 26 year old survivor of the Red Death (the scary airborne disease). She has lost her parents and her lover, now is alone in this underpopulated new world. Alex wonders around, looking for a new place to call home. This is when Alex’s life begins to get treacherous.
The other main character is Evelyn Bennett, a medic that is raising a young orphan and living in a commune. While her environment is safe from attacks on the outside, it is definitely not safe from the inside. The commune is run by a drug addicted sexist sociopath.
This book was an adventure that’s for sure. Amy Dunne did a great job of setting the scene and letting the story rip. It was one undertaking after the next for Alex, Evelyn and their friends. While I thought the overall story was very good, I thought the one area it lacked that would have made the book stellar was overall character development. I never felt like I knew much about any of the characters, including the two mains on more than just a superficial level.
Overall an interesting read, and a good book if you want something a little bit different.
