Breathe by Cari Hunter

You know when you pick up a Cari Hunter book you are in for one hell of a ride. This writer can really write a book! In her newest novel, Breathe, she gives you amazing characters, thoughtful dialogue and a plot that just won’t stop.

Jemima Pardon is an accident waiting to happen. She’s klutzy and just one of those people that is a magnet for disasters. Jem just happens to be the best damn paramedic in Manchester. While Jem is on her own on night trying to help a patient she gets a ton of help from police officer Rosie Jones. These two quirky characters hit it off right from the start. Both Rosie and Jem’s characters are full of complexity. Their backgrounds make them who they are today, and Hunter takes us on the ride of bringing their past to their present if that makes any sense. She gives us enough detail and emotion to bring them to life. I loved their banter and wittiness even in the most harrowing situations.

This is a great book to pick for when you really want to escape. As with all Cari Hunter books you are getting a quality story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Seeing Red: A Sapphic Fairy Tale by Cara Malone

Seeing Red is Cara Malone’s best work to date. She takes an old fairy tale and remakes it into something modern and fresh.

Kiera Murphy turns tail and runs for solace at Nana’s house. Everyone thinks of her as the benevolent granddaughter that moves in with her elderly grandmother to offer care and assistance as Alzheimer’s has wreaked havoc upon Nana’s memory. Nope, Kiera is happy to help and she adores her grandmother, she really has run away from life at the sorority house because she dropped her guard and in a drunken moment kissed her best friend.

Hunter Ross is up to her neck in debt, not her own but the debt-saddled upon her by her sister, Piper. Piper a single mother of two young boys has had a run of bad luck. Her husband, a small-time crook and con-man has landed himself a long-term stint in prison leaving Piper with more bills than income and her dead-end job at a local coffee shop isn’t going to get any better income-wise. Hunter has stepped up for her big sister dropping out of nursing school and working nights and every shift she can get at a nursing home. All her other free time is spent caring for her nephews. No matter how hard Piper and Hunter work there is never enough money to get ahead.

Kiera and Piper have a chance meeting at the coffeehouse and Piper sells her sister’s caregiver skills to the college senior. Kiera needs help with Nana while she is in class and Hunter needs the extra income. Of course, you know what comes next, heck yeah, Kiera and Hunter have that spark. They gravitate towards each other and the pull is too strong to resist. This is a sweet and sexy romance that I just adored.

Capturing Forever by Erin Dutton

Capturing Forever is a story of second chances. Losing the love of your life, because you put work over family too many times, she finally had enough and left you. Could you have another chance or is eight years separated too long?

Jacqueline “Jac” Knight is a regional manager of human resources for a large shipping company. She travels non-stop, home only a handful of days in a month. Jac has worked tirelessly to rise up the corporate latter. She has put everything on the backburner on her quest to the top. Unfortunately the sacrifices she has made for her career have been huge personally. The love of her life asked her to leave, never being home was too much to endure, and her relationship with her father has deteriorated greatly. When Jac’s father’ health begins to rapidly decline, she must make some hard choices. She must rely on her ex-wife to hold things together while she is gone on business. Finally, Jac begins to see the error of her ways years ago. Is it too late to get her back?

Casey Meadow’s is Jac’s ex. She has a thriving photography business that she has built over the years. Between running her small business and caring for her teen son, Casey has had to do most of it alone. Her girlfriend wants them to take it to the next level and move in together, but Casey isn’t sure. She finds herself pulling back every time. When Jacqueline’s dad, who is also very close with Casey, takes a turn for the worse, she can’t help but jump in and assist in his care. Being around Jac raises old feelings, but is she willing to risk her heart again on the one person that could absolutely destroy it.

Jac and Casey have chemistry with each other, while it doesn’t set the pages aflame, it is there. You can feel their love for one another. I loved their dialogue between each other I just wish there had been more of it. There are a number of players in this one and they do take away some of the time between the two mains. Both ladies have another lover, and that was kind of hard for me. I felt like we needed more buildup. Fan the flames so to speak. You most definitely wanted them to find their way back to each other. Their reunion just had so many obstacles to overcome.

I liked this one. It’s a well thought out book, interesting and the pacing is done well. The character’s felt real and relatable.  I wish these two would have been honest with each other and had more substantial conversations. Overall a good read.
