In the Shadow of Darkness by Nicole Stiling

Nicole Stiling’s latest novel gives us vampires. What is it about vampires that draws us in so much. Paranormal isn’t usually one of my go-to’s but this was a fun and well-written change of pace.

Megan Denham is in the wrong place at the wrong time and all hell breaks loose. The 30-something realtor stops by a local gas station and walks right into an armed robbery. I won’t give away all the details but know, all hope was lost for Megan until something stepped in and saved her.

Our other main character is Angeline. Angeline is definitely not what she seems. The gorgeous veterinarian has secrets that she has kept for a very long time. She is drawn to Megan in a way she has not been drawn to another woman in ages. As the book progresses you learn of Angeline’s story, often through flashbacks. Stiling does a great job of giving you the history of this enigmatic character and how she become who she is today.

There is romance, there is a lot of action, history and well, vampires. It is a well-written book, my only hang-up is that at times it felt too rushed. There is a lot of detail coming at you in regard to Angeline’s character and her past life. That took away from the romance in my opinion. I would have liked more emotion between our leading ladies. It felt superficial in the love department. Lust, yes, I got that, true love, I needed more.

Overall, this was an engaging story that was a fun and exciting change of pace. If this book continues into a series, which I felt like that was the direction the ending gave us, I am totally here for it. Stiling is a great writer and I am so interested to see what direction she takes us next. Give this book a chance if you love vamps, history or you just need to switch things up from your regular les-fic.

Have a Bite by R.G. Emanuelle

I was drawn to this book by the cover. It was cool, it was different and I thought why not. I like vampires! Chefs are badass! So let’s give Have a Bite a role.

Delphine Bouchard is chef and a vampire. You of course already know this but, hey I had to start somewhere.  This vamp she eats, she drinks and she creates culinary masterpieces at her ultra-cool Brooklyn restaurant, Vie Sang. Del avoids love and relationships at all cost. She prefers quick hookups with groupies and vampire submissives. Quick, easy, no mess at all, that is her style. All of this changes, well kind of, when she meets and instantly falls head of heels for another vampire,  Jocelyn.

To be honest I expected more from this book based on its premise than what was delivered. The book at times is a little bit confusing when all of the characters, food descriptions and the evil food critic wanting to destroy Del’s life. A lot is happening in a very short amount of space. Jocelyn, Del’s main love interest is virtually unknown other than meeting Del and making her rethink her vow to never fall in love again. I guess in terms of romance if someone affected you that much, why would you continuously hook up with random strangers. Obviously I can get it to some extent, but in terms of the story I felt it left me a little cold toward the character of Delphine. The action was lacking, the romance was missing and overall none of the characters were developed enough to really make you understand their actions or root for their success.

Ex-Wives of Dracula by Georgette Kaplan

Ex-Wives of Dracula by Georgette Kaplan is very, very good. I’m talking you better hold onto your horses because this is a wild ride of awesomeness. This book is fun, crazy, interesting and oh so sexy.

Mindy Murphy is kind of a dork. I’m not being mean, this is a self- proclaimed title. She doesn’t buy into any of the malarkey that is synonymous with high school. She does her own thing and she’s totally secure with herself. She is biding her time till she can get out of her small town. She is above the fray of high school drama. Mindy is one of those self-aware kids that are light years ahead of her peers, she is so cool and hip, but not in the teen-aged approved way, if you know what I mean.

Lucia West is the queen of Mindy’s small town Texas high school. As head cheerleader, Lucia, has everything going for her. She literally has the perfect body and the perfect star football player boyfriend. Lucia West is literally living the high school dream. One thing about this character that makes her unforgettable is she is wild and crazy with a foul mouth and bad attitude.

The character development and dialogue are superb in this book. The two mains are quirky, lovable and unique. They have dialogue that is fresh and honest. I really felt like I was sitting with two teenagers. It is quite captivating how Lucia interacts with others, especially Mindy. These two have a banter that is fabulous. You can see through their interactions how their relationship is developing from friendship to some something more.

Once the book establishes where it is going, Lucia becoming a vamp, hold on because this book begins to go a breakneck speed. You literally will not be able to put it down. There is so much going on, but what is never lost is the love story between Mindy and Lucia. As the book evolves, and new aspects of the story come into play, Lucia and Mindy relationship is still the main focus. It is so good, so honest and sensual, in a vampire/human kind of way!

You will not be disappointed with this one. This book is fantastic from beginning to end. Seriously this book is damn good!

I received a copy of this book by Ylva Publishing in return for an honest review.

The Vampire Next Door by Natalie Vivien & Bridget Essex

This is a fast entertaining read. I thought the authors did a great job with the characters of Courtney & Lare. Their chemistry was definitely there, and I was rooting for them to get together the whole time. They were just so likable and nice!

The book introduces us to Courtney, an antique book store owner who is struggling to keep her business and love life afloat. Courtney is currently in a relationship that is stale and flat and has impending doom written all over it. Mia has a wondering eye and Courtney puts up with it. Then Lare enters the picture. Lare is a sexy red headed vampire with a French accent who takes Courtney’s breath away. Let the struggle begin. Courtney wants the hot vampire but she still has her not so great girlfriend Mia, and Courtney doesn’t do cheating. Got to love a lady with honor!

I really liked the interactions between Lare and Courtney. It was very sweet and enduring. I loved that both characters were intelligent and didn’t deny what was happening between them. The authors gave great visual descriptions, and I felt like I was right there in the story. I will say I was somewhat disinterested in the vampire conflicts with SANG (aka Vampire haters). I also thought that other than Azure, Courtney’s BFF, the other supporting characters were flat and uninteresting.

Good book, fast read. I enjoyed my time with it.
